Just another Arizona sunset

Just another Arizona sunset

At first glance I would expect most people to see this photo and NOT choose Phoenix, Arizona as the location it was taken. You have some farm fields, tall trees, wildflowers and some hay protected by the sun. Definitely not something people naturally picture when it comes to Arizona and our deserts. Ah, but it is.

I photographed this last night about 1.5 miles from my house down in Chandler, which is basically on the southeastern corner of the metropolitan Phoenix area. We're moving soon to downtown Phoenix and I'm going to miss sights like these on a few miles away. But out here, amidst the new home developments, shopping areas and industrial construction, you still have pockets of farms and agriculture thriving and hanging around. I love it.

The monsoon season hasn't really nailed Phoenix yet, but the debris clouds have been spectacular and last night's sunset was full of rays shining through clouds, stretching across the sky. The sunset photo I posted a few days ago ironically also had sunflowers in them, but they are really all over the place right now. I saw them here earlier in the week and knew I wanted to head back for a sunset shot whenever I got the chance.

Technically, this is a hand-held, 3-bracket HDR from Photomatix, CS5, Imagenomic and some Topaz. I Actually processed two HDRs for this, one to get the sky right, one to get the flowers and foreground a little more colorful, and then masked them together in CS5.

I also used a new lens that I purchased off Craigslist...a simple Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4 Di LP SD. The price was cheap and I've been wanting to get a nice wide angle for portrait shooting, and one with a decently wide aperture. All the reviews of this lens, plus the sample shots, were fantastic. If anything, it's an amazing upgrade from my 18-55mm Canon kit lens. I loved the way this shot turned out.

For Sheila

For Sheila

I took my wife to the hospital early this morning for a minor surgical procedure, and she will remain there overnight. The hospital is on the west side of Phoenix, about 26 miles from where we live, and we arrived shortly before 7:00 a.m. I stayed there until around 4:00, after the procedure was over and Sheila had awakened from the anesthesia. She was very tired, but as I left, I promised to return a bit later with Vanessa, which I will do as soon as I finish posting this.

I took my camera with me even though I didn't really expect to use it at all. During the long hours of waiting, I read at times, dozed at others, and watched CNN during the moments in between, until Sheila was taken to her room. On the way there, I saw several bouquets of flowers on display at a nurses' station; and as I was leaving a half-hour or so later, I asked for permission to photograph them. Permission granted, I set to work and took 8 pictures, of which I liked this one best.

I post it here now, affectionately dedicated to Sheila. I think I will order a print of this one from Mpix, then frame it and present it to her as a gift. It won't arrive in time for Valentine's Day, of course, but will make up for that by being a little more permanent than anything I could have purchased in a flower shop. Besides, it might remind her of an important -- and, we hope, very positive -- event in her life.

I can't identify this flower, but anyone who can do so is invited to speak up and educate me.

Sunflower Fields Forever

Sunflower Fields Forever

For the Pimp My Page Challenge #38 on PeppermintCreative.com.

There's this large field right behind our new apartment complex, and it's covered in sunflowers! Not the gigantic ones, but still pretty. I wonder how long it'll last -- it's the last large lot around this area. I foresee doctors offices soon to complement the hospital next door. Oh, well, I'll enjoy it while I can. ^_^

Overview of Scrapbooking Embellishments I Made June 11, 2010

These items were created today, June 11, 2010 by me. I used an old Creative Memories template for the two different Journaling tag shapes. The one flower that is shown on a rectangle as well as a shape cut out is a rubber stamp called "flower" by vap! Scrap. The two floral bouquets are from a clear stamp sheet called "Botanical Flourishes" by Scrappy Cat. The paper is all from 1995/6 Creative Memories. Ink to stamp lines was Ink Dot black. Other lines and stamping and coloring done using my basic gel pens in glitter ink or metallic ink.

The Surprising Life of Constance Spry

"Dress by Schiaperelli, photographs by Cecil Beaton, flowers by Constance Spry—The decorator of the moment, the photographer of the moment, the florist of the moment—what more could you ask?"
Thus Vogue magazine described the wedding in 1937 of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, but today Constance Spry is better known as the author of that bible of middle-class housewives throughout the land, The Constance Spry Cookery Book. But who was she? Those of us who recognize the name think only of recipes, but her story is in fact that of a profoundly unconventional woman, who went from a poverty stricken childhood to the height of London society, taking in a career as rich and varied as it was unusual for a woman of her era. Connie began her life teaching slum children and ended it creating the floral displays for the coronation Queen Elizabeth II. Along the way, she escaped a violent marriage, had a lengthy affair with a cross-dressing lesbian artist, and built a hugely successful business as a society florist. Today, her influence can be seen in every unorthodox flower arrangement, every "natural" bouquet tied with rattan and, of course, in the gardens up and down the country planted with the Constance Spry rose.
